Behind Summer Selvedge

Summer Selvedge explores the relationship between two seemingly opposing ideas: structured winter silhouettes and lightweight summer fabrics. Built around beautiful, soft, 100% linen tailoring, the collection reimagines how men can dress through the warmer months, challenging the notion that summer wardrobes must be limited to shorts and T-shirts. Through considered design, relaxed proportions and breathable natural fabrics, Summer Selvedge introduces a new perspective on contemporary summer menswear.

Rethinking Summer Menswear

As temperatures rise, men's wardrobes often become simpler rather than more versatile. Heavy outerwear disappears, layering becomes difficult, and most outfits are reduced to the familiar rotation of shorts, T-shirts and the occasional button-up shirt. While practical, this simplicity can leave summer style feeling repetitive and lacking the depth that makes Autumn / Winter dressing so desirable.

For us, the question became: why should summer wardrobes require sacrificing personality? If winter wardrobes are celebrated for their structure, layering and versatility, why can't those same qualities exist during the warmer months?

The answer wasn't to add more layers or heavier garments. Instead, it meant rethinking the materials themselves. Lightweight, breathable natural fabrics like linen offered an opportunity to challenge conventional summer silhouettes while remaining comfortable in the heat.

During our research, we found that premium linen menswear often fell into one of two extremes. Linen trousers were either slim and heavily tapered or extremely oversized with elastic waistbands that leaned more towards loungewear than everyday tailoring. Options that combined relaxed proportions with considered construction were surprisingly rare.

The same was true of outerwear. While linen shirts are easy to find, thoughtfully designed linen jackets are far less common. Yet we saw an opportunity to create a lightweight jacket that could introduce shape, structure and subtle layering into summer dressing without compromising comfort.

Summer evenings rarely demand heavy outerwear, but often leave the door open for an extra layer. A lightweight linen jacket offers exactly that, adding texture, proportion and personality while remaining breathable enough for warm weather wear. It became the starting point for exploring how winter-inspired silhouettes could be reimagined through the lens of summer.

Why Linen Defines Summer Menswear

Every collection begins with a material. For Summer Selvedge, that material could only be linen.

Widely regarded as one of the finest natural fabrics for warm weather clothing, linen has been worn for centuries for its exceptional breathability, lightweight feel and ability to regulate body temperature. Woven from fibres of the flax plant, its naturally open structure allows air to circulate freely, making it an ideal choice for long summer days and humid evenings.

Unlike many synthetic fabrics that trap heat and moisture, premium linen encourages airflow while absorbing and releasing moisture efficiently. The result is a fabric that remains cool against the skin, dries quickly and becomes increasingly soft with every wear. Rather than deteriorating over time, linen develops character, creating garments that feel more personal as they age.

Beyond performance, linen possesses a unique visual quality that few fabrics can replicate. Its subtle texture, natural drape and understated irregularities bring depth to even the most minimal designs. This balance of refinement and ease allows tailoring to feel relaxed rather than rigid, making linen perfectly suited to contemporary summer menswear.

For Summer Selvedge, linen became more than a practical fabric choice. It became the foundation of the collection's design philosophy. By pairing natural 100% linen with structured silhouettes more commonly associated with winter wardrobes, we were able to explore the relationship between breathability and tailoring, softness and structure, familiarity and contrast.

Every jacket and trouser in the collection is constructed from carefully selected 100% natural linen, chosen not only for its comfort but for the way it evolves over time. As the fabric softens and develops its own character through wear, each garment becomes a reflection of the person wearing it, creating an enduring wardrobe staple designed to improve with age rather than simply endure it.

Sourcing Summer Selvedge

For us, designing a collection extends far beyond sketching silhouettes or selecting colours. Understanding how a garment is made is just as important as deciding how it should look. As Summer Selvedge began to take shape, we knew that achieving the level of quality we envisioned meant becoming part of the process ourselves.

That commitment took us from Sydney to Guangzhou, China, where we spent time alongside the manufacturers responsible for bringing the collection to life. Face to face conversations allowed us to discuss every detail of the garments, refine construction methods and ensure the collection stayed true to the original vision from sampling through to production.

Outside the factory, some of the most valuable moments were spent walking through Guangzhou's vast fabric markets. Surrounded by hundreds of different materials, weights and textures, we were able to compare fabrics side by side, learning how even the smallest variations could change the way a finished garment looks, feels and performs.

It was during this process that we selected the our linen used throughout Summer Selvedge. The fabric delivered everything we had been searching for; breathability for the Australian summer, enough structure to support the collection's tailored silhouettes, and a natural texture that would continue to soften and develop character over time.

The journey also reinforced something that sits at the centre of House of Dawn. Great garments are not created by a single person or a single idea. They are the result of skilled pattern makers, machinists, fabric specialists and manufacturers working together through countless decisions, refinements and iterations. Visiting the people behind that process gave us a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship behind every piece and strengthened our commitment to creating clothing with intention rather than compromise.

The Design Philosophy Behind Summer Selvedge

House of Dawn approaches design through narrative rather than trend. Each collection begins with a concept rooted in contrast; between memory and modernity, structure and ease, past and present.

Summer Selvedge continues this exploration by asking a simple question: what would winter silhouettes look like if they were rebuilt for summer?

At the centre of the collection is the idea of structured tailoring traditionally associated with colder months, reinterpreted through lightweight, breathable materials. By applying this approach to linen, the collection creates a dialogue between opposing elements; heavy referencing light, structure meeting softness, and formality existing within a relaxed seasonal context.

The silhouettes themselves are intentionally familiar. The Structured Linen Jacket and Linen Trousers draw inspiration from classic workwear and denim construction, reimagined through a more relaxed summer lens. This includes considered proportions, slightly oversized fits, and detailing that reinforces structure without adding weight.

Rather than stripping garments back for summer, Summer Selvedge rebuilds them differently. The goal is not minimalism for its own sake, but refinement through balance, creating pieces that feel composed without being restrictive, and expressive without being excessive.

This tension between opposing ideas sits at the core of the collection. It reflects a broader design philosophy at House of Dawn: clothing should exist in contrast, not compromise.

The Collection

Summer Selvedge consists of two core pieces designed to work independently or as a complete set: the Structured Linen Jacket and the Structured Linen Pants. Together, they form a modern interpretation of summer tailoring built around structure, breathability and ease of wear.

Rather than expanding into a large seasonal offering, the collection focuses on refinement through restraint. Each piece has been considered in proportion, fabrication and construction to ensure it delivers both versatility and longevity within a summer wardrobe.

Styling Summer Selvedge

Both pieces are designed to be worn as a complete set or styled individually.

The full linen set creates a relaxed form of summer tailoring, ideal for warm evenings, coastal environments or elevated everyday wear. Worn separately, the jacket functions as a lightweight layering piece over simple tees or tanks, while the trousers offer a structured alternative to shorts without feeling heavy or restrictive.

Together, they represent a shift away from minimal summer dressing and towards more intentional, structured silhouettes built for modern menswear.

Structured Linen Pants

The Structured Linen Pants are designed as a modern alternative to traditional summer bottoms. Built with a relaxed silhouette.

Constructed from the same premium 100% linen as the jacket, the trousers balance softness with structure, allowing them to hold shape while remaining breathable in warm weather. A standard belted waistband replaces elasticated construction, creating a more refined and tailored finish.

Functional design details include 5-pocket denim-inspired construction, custom metal rivets, a YKK fly zip and a V-shaped back yoke for improved fit and shaping. A central front seam runs down each leg, subtly dividing the silhouette and adding structure to the overall drape.

The result is a trouser that feels familiar in construction but elevated in execution, bridging the gap between casual summerwear and considered tailoring.

Structured Linen Jacket

The Structured Linen Jacket reinterprets traditional outerwear through a lightweight summer lens. Inspired by classic workwear and denim jacket silhouettes, it has been re-engineered using premium 100% linen to create structure without weight.

Designed with a relaxed, slightly boxy fit, the jacket maintains shape while allowing airflow and movement in warmer conditions. A two-way YKK zip closure adds functionality and adaptability, while the internal construction has been refined to ensure comfort when worn open or layered.

Key design details include a split centre-front panel, horizontal yoke construction and subtle tailoring references that reinforce the garment’s structure. The result is a jacket that introduces layering into summer dressing without compromising breathability or ease.
